Romeo Varsity Hockey
The Romeo Varsity hockey team participated in the 2012 OAA vs. MAC Showcase on February 4th at the Onyx of Rochester. The Bulldogs were hoping to continue their success after back to back wins including their last victory at the Children’s Cancer Benefit game. Unfortunately, their hopes were dashed when Rochester United defeated the Bulldogs in a closely fought game with a score of 3-1 including an empty net goal at the end of the third period.
The two teams were equally matched throughout the first period even though Romeo was short-handed twice. Goalie Anthony Grifka made a spectacular glove save on a two-on-one break away. The period ended with a score of 0-0.
During the second period, Romeo’s momentum increased as they out played Rochester United. They had three power play opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them. At the end of the period, the score remained 0-0 as the teams went to the locker room while the ice was resurfaced.
The third period opened with one minute and sixteen seconds remaining on the Bulldog’s power play. The Bulldog’s breakout was unsuccessful when the puck stuck in an area of water on the ice. A Rochester United player capitalized on the unfortunate situation and popped the puck in the net, surprising everyone. The Bulldogs regrouped and the play intensified with both teams having scoring opportunities. With 12:38 remaining in the third, Rochester United scored again making the score 2-0. Back and forth action continued when Greg Balsam, with a strong fore-check, knocked the puck loose from a Rochester United player along the boards. Jeremy Spears picked up the puck, skated through two players and put the puck in the net making the score 2-1. The Bulldogs worked to tie the score by pulling their goalie and having an extra skater. Their fate was sealed when an empty net goal was scored with 48.8 seconds remaining in the game.
This week the Bulldogs play in the Michigan Public High School Hockey Showcase in Chelsea, Michigan. They face the Bloomfield Chargers on February 8th and the Grand Blanc Bobcats on February 9th.
